Effective implementation of ERM in accordance with international standards is therefore only possible upon the development of a Risk Management Framework.

In practice, the development of risk management framework as a policy must include the commitment of the board and top management to provide adequate resources to ensure effective implementation, required skills development and training of members of staff, to enable all responsible officers understand and appreciate the importance and benefits of ERM activity at all levels of the hierarchy, whilst pursuing value.

Enterprise Risk Management could be defined as:

  • The culture, capabilities, and practices, integrated with strategy-setting and performance, that organizations rely on to manage risk in creating, preserving, and realizing value (COSO, 2017).
  • The systemic risk management culture and practices embedded in all levels of corporate activity and capabilities, effectively based on a framework designed to enable the organisation create value for sustainability, resilience and agility (FCMS Consulting, 2020).

Risk

  • The effect of uncertainties on objectives (ISO, 2009).
  • Risk is the possible deviations from expected results.
  • It is the likely events and consequences (internal and external) which impact the realization of objectives and expected results.

Risk Management

  • Coordinated activities to direct and control an organization with regard to risk (ISO, 2009).

Risk Management Process

  • Systematic application of management policies, procedures and practices to the activities of communicating, consulting, establishing the context, and identifying, analyzing, evaluating, treating, monitoring and reviewing risk (ISO, 2009).

All organizations need to implement enterprise risk management for long-term success.
